This province was part of the part of the pre-colonial kingdon of Kotte and then came under Portuguese, Dutch and British control. In 1815 the British gained control of the entire island of Ceylon. Ruins of the once glorious Panduwasnuwara, Dambadeniya and Yapahuwa too are located as the testaments of ancient Hasthishailapura.
