The Kingdom of Bhutan is wedged between India and China along the lofty mountains of the eastern Himalayas. Bhutan is comparable to Switzerland in both size and topography, being largely mountainous. With these borders a giant staircase is formed — from a narrow strip of land in the south at an altitude of 10,000 feet. These unclimbed Himalayan peaks are among the highest on Earth. The first tourists came to Bhutan in 1974 when the present monarch His Majesty the King Jigme Singye Wangchuk was crowned as the fourth King of this land, the Thunder Dragon. Bhutan is not for travelers who expect five star accommodations and world-class cuisine, but rather for adventurers who are hardy and flexible. We will stay in first class Western-style hotels in Paro, Thimpu, and Wangdi, but as we move further eastward and stay in typical Bhutanese guest houses you should expect comfortable but "rougher" accommodations.
