Diu is a town in the union territory of Daman and Diu. It lies at the eastern end and once known as the `Gibraltar of the East’ and also as a fishing town. Diu was an important port on trade routes of Arabian sea of Indian Ocean and historically it was part of the Saurashtra region of Gujarat. It was a flourishing Portuguese colony from the 16th century onwards. Battle of Diu in 1509 was fought as Diu has a strategic importance. As development of Bombay now called as `Mumbai’ started taken place, Diu’s strategic importance declined and it reduced to a town of museum or historical landmark. Diu remained in the possession of the Portuguese from 1535 until 1961, when it fell in the possession of the troops of the Indian Union. The golden sand beaches, blue sea waters, clean environment and friendly local population make Diu a perfect tourist destination.
