Sigiriya is an ancient palace located in the central Province, Sri Lanka. Sigiriya is one UNESCO's World Heritage Sites. The land of Sigiriya is full of culture and history, and this site was selected by King Kasyapa (477 – 495 CE) for his new capital. He built his palace on the top of this rock and decorated its sides with colorful frescoes. The surrounding landscape lily pad covered moats, water gardens and quiet shrines and the excellent site museum, the whole face of the hill appears to have been a gigantic picture gallery perhaps the largest picture gallery in the world. The paintings consist of beautiful ladies of about 500 or more. More frescoes can be seen elsewhere in a location called the Cobra Hood Cave.

The sigiriya museum is known one of the most attractive in south Asia. A UNESCO world heritage museum represents its cultural, technological and archaeological. The museum exhibits of various artifacts found through archaeological excavations such as a human skeleton, tools, jewels, sculptures. The first section of Museum belongs to the Prehistoric Sigiriya. Then the early Buddhist monastic periods are featured followed by the Pre Kasyapa period. Finally the third gallery is solely dedicated to King Kasyapa which is the ‘Golden Age’ of Sigiriya.
The royal garden is a beautiful place to explore away from the crowds. The lower section of garden is a beautifully landscaped area dotted with water gardens, and then as you approach the rock its foothills contain boulder gardens and terraced gardens. The boulder gardens, closer to the rock itself, feature rocks that once formed the bases of buildings. The rock rises sheer and mysterious from the jungle. A series of steps leads up through the boulders at its base to the western face, and then ascends it steeply. The base of Sigiriya has been landscaped to produce the terraced garden.
This wall was coated with a smooth glaze upon which visitors felt impelled to note their impressions of the women in the gallery above – or so says local legend. The graffiti was inscribed between the 6th and 14th centuries. The graffiti is of great interest to scholars because they show the development of the Sinhala language and script, and because they demonstrate an appreciation of art and beauty.
