About Trichy

Trichy also called as Tiruchirappalli, Tiruchi is situated on the banks of the river Cauvery and it is the fourth largest city in Tamil Nadu. The name of the town, "Tiruchirapalli", originated as a tribute (thiru in Tamil means respected) to a Jain monk called "Chira". There is also a belief that Tiruchirapalli was named after a three headed demon "Trishira" (the son of Ravana) who performed penance at the Siva temple here and obtained boons here. Trichy may have been a capital of the early Cholas in the 3rd century BC. It passed through the hands of the Pallavas, medieval Cholas, Pandyas, Delhi Sultanate and Vijayanagars before the Madurai Nayaks really brought it to prominence, making it a capital in the 17th century. Trichy is a fine blend of tradition and modernity built around the Rock Fort. It isn’t just a travel junction but is also mix up of a throbbing bazaar with some major must-see temples.

Rockfort Temples

s The Tiruchirapalli Rock Fort is a historic fort built by King Mahendra Varman of the 7th Century. Evidences of Jain occupation around the rock are still extant. The temple complex built on an ancient rock, is constructed on a 273-foot high rock. It is easily visible from any part of the town and from any direction. The Rock Fort temple stands 83m tall perched atop the rock. The smooth rock was first cut by the Pallavas but it was the Nayaks of Madurai who completed both the temples under the Vijayanagara empire. There are two Hindu temples inside the Rockfort, The Uchchi Pillaiyar Koil and The Siva Temple.
