Vythiri a little town and hill station, is a Taluk (tehsil) in hill district Wayanad. About 40 km from Vythiri, Edakkal Caves are at Ambukutty Mala. Edakkal literally means a stone in between and it’s a pre-historic rock shelter formed naturally out of a strange disposition of three huge boulders making one to rest on the other two with its bottom jutting out in between and serving as the roof. The then superintendent of police, F. Fawcett discovered these caves accidentally and identified them as a prehistoric site and as a habitat of neolithic people on the basis of the nature of representations on the cave walls, which appeared to him as engravings made of neolithics celts. Fawcett went around exploring the Wayanad high ranges which eventually led to the discovery of the Edakkal rock-shelter in 1894. 
Lakkidi Hill station is 5 km away from Vythiri and situated at 700 m above sea level. It is the gateway of Wayanad district. It gets the second highest degree of rainfall in the world. Lakkidi is one of the highest locations in Wayanad. Photo-crazy people consider it a life-time chance to snap different shots as the view of the valley is superb. The lofty mountain peaks, the gurgling stream, luxuriant vegetation and the bird's eye view of the deep valley on the south, with its winding roads, are breathtaking. 
It is a natural fresh water lake, 3 km south of Vythiri. The lake with area of 8.5 ha and water depth of 6.5 m brimmed in ever green mountains. The scenic beauty and the nature makes Pookode lake as the most sought after tourist spot of Vythiri. There is an aquarium and a green- house and one can also find boating facilities.
