Alleppey also known as 'Alappuzha' was founded by Divan of Travanacore, Raja Keshawadasan in 1762. By virtue of its location with the arabian sea on the west and a vast network of lakes, Alleppey is of immense natural beauty. In the early first decade of the 20th century the then Viceroy of the Indian Empire, Lord Curzon made a visit in the State to Alleppey. Alleppey also figures in classified Literature, Kuttanad, the rice bowl of Kerala. Carved out of erstwhile Kottayam and Kollam (Quilon) districts, Alleppey district was formed on 17th of August 1957. It is also referred to as the `Venice of the East’ by travellers from all over the world because of its famed palm-fringed canal network, the intricate byways and narrow streams. Today, Alleppey (Alappuzha) has grown in importance as a backwater tourist centre & also famous for its boat races, houseboat holidays, beaches, marine products and coir industry.

It is one of the most popular picnic spots in Alleppey and also best beach locations for movies. The pier, which extends into the sea here, is over 137 years old. One of the oldest churches in Kerala, the Champakulam Church is believed to be one of the prominent establishment by St.Thomas. It was built way back in 427 AD and has seen a number of structural changes in its centuries of existence. The most important fest held here, is in the name of its patron, St. Joseph held on the 19th of March every year. The annual festival held in the beginning of the month of October is a great fanfare. Champakulam is an important tourist spot and is famous for the Moolam boat race.
Also called as 'Rice Bowl of Kerala' because of its wealth of paddy crops, it is in the heart of backwaters and set in interiors of Alleppey. Kuttanad is a vast area of reclaimed land separated by dikes from water that is actually few feet higher. Four major rivers of Kerala also flow into this region. The scenic sight of it also has a rich field of banana etc. Kuttanad is also the only region in the world where farming is done about 2 m below sea level. One can take a walk by the numerous canals that crisscross Kuttanad, as these canal stretches would be abuzz with different activities and make tour more exciting by enjoying a boat ride.
