Alleppey also known as 'Alappuzha' was founded by Divan of Travanacore, Raja Keshawadasan in 1762. By virtue of its location with the arabian sea on the west and a vast network of lakes, Alleppey is of immense natural beauty. In the early first decade of the 20th century the then Viceroy of the Indian Empire, Lord Curzon made a visit in the State to Alleppey. Alleppey also figures in classified Literature, Kuttanad, the rice bowl of Kerala. Carved out of erstwhile Kottayam and Kollam (Quilon) districts, Alleppey district was formed on 17th of August 1957. It is also referred to as the `Venice of the East’ by travellers from all over the world because of its famed palm-fringed canal network, the intricate byways and narrow streams. Today, Alleppey (Alappuzha) has grown in importance as a backwater tourist centre & also famous for its boat races, houseboat holidays, beaches, marine products and coir industry.
