About Hassan

The town is home to the Master Control Facility and was founded in the 11th century by Channa Krishnappa Naik, a chieftain (palegar). It is located in the south-western part of Karnataka. The Hassan district falls under the Malnad and Maidan regions. The popular belief is that the place is called Hassan after the goddess Hassan-amma or Hasanamba, the presiding deity of the local Hasanamba temple situated in the old town area. Some consider Hassan as the temple-architectural capital of Karnataka. It reached the height of its glory during the rule of Hoysala dynasty who ruled from Dwara Samudra the capital city then, between the 11th and 14th century. The ruins can still be found in and around Halebid in the Hassan district. Well known for its historical values, Hassan now is city which has grown in leaps and bounds.

Hasanamba Temple s

s Built in the 12th century, the temple is open to the public for a week, once a year only during the lunar month of Ashwayuja, during Diwali in October. It was originally built by the Hoysala dynasty in their tradition, reflecting their faith in Jainism.  The Hasanamba temple dedicated to Shakti is particularly significant and unique in many ways. There is an unusual image depicting Ravana from the epic Ramayana with nine heads instead of ten, playing the veena. The reason for this image in the inner sanctum sanctorum is unknown but is very interesting nevertheless.
