About Bikaner

Bikaner is a city in the northwest of Rajasthan and located 330 kilometres from the state capital, Jaipur. It is also a great desert kingdom of Rajasthan. It was founded in 1486 by Rao Bika, the disgruntled younger son of Rao Jodha, the ruler of Jodhpur. Bikaner with its old walled town where camels saunter past colourful stalls, the imposing palaces, beautiful and richly sculptured temples of red and yellow sand stones which display some of the finest creations of Rajput civilization, has lot in store for visitors.. Bikaner is famous for sweets and snacks (or namkeens in Hindi).

Junagarh Forts

s This fort was built by Raja Rai Singhji, the sixth ruler of Bikaner, who ruled form 1571 to 1612 AD. It is protected by a 986-m long sandstone wall with 37 bastions, a moat and effectively by the forbidding expanse of the Thar desert. The fort was originally called Chintamaniand was renamed Junagarh or `Old Fort’ in the early 20th century when the ruling family moved to Lalgarh Palace outside the fort limits.
