About Nalanda

Nalanda is located about 95 kilometres southeast of Patna, was a religious centre of learning from the fifth century CE to 1197 CE. It was once the most prestigious centre of learning in Asia, the Buddhist University of Nalanda was founded in 5th century AD, had over 5,000 international students and teachers and library of nine million manuscripts. Built on a hallowed site where Buddha often stayed, Nalanda flourished until AD 1199. The great Chinese scholar monk, Hiuen Tsang, travelled across forbidding deserts and mountains to come to Nalanda in the early 7th century AD.

Nalanda Archaeological Museums

s Nalanda Archaeological Museum is a museum that exclusively exhibits the relics of the ancient Nalanda University and its adjoining areas. It offers a authentic inside into the Pala art which proves that the university gave equal importance to creative arts along with the intellectual development. This museum has four galleries and out of the 13463 antiquities excavated 349 are on display in these galleries. The artifacts from Nalanda dates back to 5th to 12th century AD.
