Picturesquely located in secluded, breathtakingly beautiful Rupshu Valley, the high-altitude Tso Moriri Lake is less than 250 kilometers southeast of Leh in the Ladakhi part of the Changthang Plateau. The Rupshu valley lies south east of Ladakh on the road from Manali to Leh at altitude ranging from 16,500 feet. Tso-Moriri or Lake Moriri is a High Altitude Lake (officially named as Tso-moriri Wetland Conservation Reserve), located in the Changthang (literal meaning, northern plains) area. Tso-moriri Lake also known as Mountain Lake is a spectacular site amidst mountain ranges in Leh. The Tso-moriri Lake measures about 28 km in length from north to south and about 4-6 km in breadth and about 100 feet average in-depth. It is the highest Ramsar site in the world. Tso Moriri attracts a range of wildlife, including migratory birds, marmots and rarely the Tibetan wolves. This pretty valley is inhabited by a small population of ‘Changspa’, who are nomadic shepherds. The lake is fed by springs and snow-melt from neighboring mountains. Most water enters the lake in two major stream systems, one entering the lake from the north, the other from the southwest. The picturesque landscape around gives this place an extremely romantic feel and breathtaking feel.
