Pahalgam is a town located 45 km from Anantnag district and is also known as `The Valley of Shepherds’. it is situated at an altitude of 7200 ft. from sea level at the junction of the streams flowing from Lidder river and the Sheshnag Lake. Pahalgam was once a humble shepherd's village with breathtaking views. Now it is Kashmir's premier resort, cool even during the height of summer when the maximum temperature does not exceed 25 deg C. Pahalgam has within it no fewer than eight tiny villages, one of which is Mamal. There is a Shiva temple here, generally considered to be Kashmir's oldest existing temple, dating to the 5th century. The surrounding mountains contain many beauty spots and over 20 lakes.

The Amarnath Yatra to Baba Amarnath Holy Cave starts from Chandanwari situated around 16 km from Pahalgam and at an altitude of around 2895 meters. One has to trek a height of about 14,500 ft for this yatra which is surrounded by beautiful valleys and mountains. Around 11 km from Chandanwari lays the mountain Lake Sheshnag, at an altitude of 3574 meter and around 13 km away is the last stop Panchtarni. 
Betaab Valley is situated 7 km up on Pahalgam and walk-able distance from it. It has got its name from Sunny Deol’s movie Betaab which was shot in this area. The Valley is towards northeast of Pahalgam and falls between Pahalgam and Chandanwadi and is en route Amarnath Temple Yatra. This valley is surrounded by snow-covered mountain peaks, dense pine and deodar forests and is the mouth of River Sheshnag. There is a beautiful garden in the valley, with a bridge to cross the river. Betaab Valley is also a favorite campsite of travelers as it also serves as a base camp for trekking and further exploration of the mountains.
Aru Valley is a small scenic village located 12 km from Pahalgam. Noted for its scenic lakes, meadows and mountains, it is a base camp for trekking to the Kolhoi Glacier and Tarsar Lake. The village lies of the left bank of the Aru river, which is a tributary of the Lidder river. It is reachable by walking along a mountainous path. the valley is also known to be a good site for camping. The way between Aru valley and Pahalgam is extremely alluring and exceptionally scenic. The location of the village is among the snow capped peaks and grasslands which make this place a tourist delight. 
Mamleshwar is considered to be an ancient temple that probably dates back to 400 AD dedicated to Lord Shiva and located at around 1.5 km from Pahalgam town. It stands across the Kolahoi stream up towards the mountain. According to the religious tale, Lord Ganesh was placed as a doorkeeper and was ordered not to allow anyone to enter inside the temple. And because of this reason that the temple is also called as Mam Mal, which means “don’t go”.
