About Kolkata

Kolkata or Calcutta as it used to be known has been through many incarnations. From an obscure village on the banks of Hoogli-river, it evolved into the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal. In the late 17th century, the three villages that predated Kolkata were ruled by the Nawab of Bengal under Mughal suzerainty. It is the principal commercial, cultural and educational centre of East of India. A factory was established in Kalikata in 1690, and Calcutta was born. Under the East India Company and later under the British Raj, Kolkata served as the capital of British held territories in India until 1911. It boasts evidence of over two millennia of habitation, with ornate, architecturally diverse buildings, ranging from crumbing ruins to Victorian treasures. Kolkata’s reputation as a city of intellectuals and culture is unrivalled in South Asia. Home to lively festivals and a vibrant artistic community, clamorous markets and packed temples, this city is crowded and polluted, but ultimately invigorating. Kolkata retains a feast of colonial-era architecture contrasting starkly with urban slums and dynamic new-town suburbs with their air-conditioned shopping malls.

Victoria Memorials

s The Victoria Memorial was built between 1906 and 1921 in the honour of Queen Victoria. After being under construction for 15 years, the memorial was ready to be visited by public in 1921.  is a fantastic place that will take you into the world of past history, where you can view the photos and effigies of prominent personalities, who made an incredible contribution in the glory of India. The memorial was built to serve a dual purpose - to mark the great success of the British Empire in India, and as a memorial to Queen Victoria. It is a 184 ft tall edifice that was constructed on 64 acres of land. The memorial has been designed in white Makrana marble following the Indo-Saracenic revivalist architectural style. A product of Mughal, Deccani, British, Egyptian, Venetian, as well as Islamic designs, the white memorial was under the architectural supervision of William Emerson.
