About Pelling

Pelling is a town in the district of West Sikkim nestled at an altitude of 2,150 m. Sikkim's capital city Gangtok is at a distance of 115 kilometres and Siliguri is about 135 kilometres from Pelling. The district headquarters of Geyzing is at a distance of 10 km from the town. It was the first capital of Sikkim and is inhabited by the Limboo tribe. It is also said that the Chogyal dynasty lived and ruled here. Pelling is influenced by the Buddhist way of living. With two of the most significant monasteries of Sikkim in Pelling, the town is considered immensely important in the Buddhist pilgrimage circuit. The misty, fairytale-like village of Pelling has magnificent views of the snow-capped mountains of Kanchenjunga and its ranges. The Himalayas and the Kanchenjanga may be viewed at close quarters from Pelling. It has a rich history, nature environment and local culture. Pelling also forms the base from where trekkers and other peripatetic adventurers undertake the strenuous and arduous treks in West Sikkim. Pelling is one of the most visited travel destination also well promoted by Sikkim Tourism.

Pemayangste Monasterys

s Pelling has a special Pemayangste Monastery. Pemayangtse literally means 'Perfect Sublime Lotus'. This monastery is only for the pure monks called as 'ta-sang' lamas and is one of the oldest and most important monasteries of Sikkim. Founded in 1705, this monastery belongs to the Nyingma-pa sect and is said to be designed and conceptualized by Lhatsun Chhembo who is Sikkim's Buddhism pioneer. Pemayangste Monastery is Sikkim's nuclei of many monasteries. The three-storied building of the monastery houses a good collection of wall paintings and sculptures. Now Pemayangste Monastery is the premier and prime most monastery of Sikkim. This place is also very crowded in Sikkim. In January/ February every year, a religious dance called 'Cham' is performed in Pemayangtse.
