Mon is a town of Nagaland and is situated at an altitude of 2,945 ft above sea level. It is 357 km from Kohima. The district was carved out of the Tuensang district (Nagaland) on 21st December 1973. The town with the exception of the foothills is hilly area with steep slopes. It is a land of the Konyaks (who are most well known for being former headhunters). Historically, the Konyaks of Mon district were tattoed warriors. The tattoos on the faces and the exquisite jewellery adorning the warriors are signs of their achievements and instincts during the headhunting days. The Konyak Nagas are well reputed craftsmen and artisans. The main source of income for the town inhabitants is agriculture and tea a major crop that is grown in the state's plantations. Mon is a forest region and rich in flora and fauna. Mon is famous for its remote geographical location with the opportunity it affords to get a glimpse of a life far removed from others. During April, the Konyaks get into a celebratory mood with the Aoleong Monyu festival. Mon is simply a mystic and euphoric place that resonates the rich tribal heritage of the state.

It is a prominent Konyak village, situated 23 km from Mon and is known for its wonderful wooden monument measuring 8 feet in height and 12 feet in breadth. This village is ruled by the hereditary chief, Angh. The chief’s house is the main attraction of the village. It is believed that Angh’s house had been built somewhere during the Metallic age, meaning its around 500 – 600 years old. Carvings of human beings and other creatures can be sighted in the monuments of the village. This work of art stands testimony to the skills of the Konyak craftsmanship. 
The Veda Peak, the highest peak in Mon is located around 70 km east of the headquarters of the Mon District. It offers a magnificent view of the Brahmaputra river in Assam and the Chindwin river in Myanmar. The waterfall in the surroundings of the peak is rated as one of the best. The scenic beauty and view from the hilltop is simply amazing and definitely a photographic delight. It is said that British soldiers first set up their camp at this peak and they also planted the first opium plant at this peak itself. Visitors can also enjoy trekking up to the hill.
Visiting Longwa village will be an experience in itself as interestingly, one half of the Angh’s (chief’s) house falls in India and the other half falls in Myanmar. It is located 42 kilometres from the main Mon town. The villagers of Longwa have dual citizenship as they live in Myanmar and India at the same time. As per the tradition, the village is still under the control of the Angh and the village Council Chairman. The Longwa village is also inhabited by the Konyaks. Since the Konyaks are known as head hunters, the presence of skulls as home decorations is very evident around the village.
