Jorhat is also referred to as 'The Cultural Capital of Assam'. It was originally formed on the eastern and western banks of the river Bhogdoi by the two markets or hats (Chowkihat and Macharhat). The city Jorhat was the last capital of the Ahom Dynasty as earlier dynasty capital was situated at Sibsagar. Jorhat acts as a gateway to upper Assam and to the state of Nagaland. However in the year 1794, the then reigning king of the Ahom Kingdom, Gaurinath, shifted the capital to Jorhat. The city was severely destroyed by the numerous Burmese invasions that took place in the year 1817. However later on the arrival of British rule, they contributed to the reemergence of this historic town.

Jorhat is considered to be home to one of the oldest tea gardens in the Indian state of Assam. It is a great place for the visitors who want to gather information about the tea harvesting and cultivation. These beautiful tea garden’s are dotted with ravishing greenery all around and looks awesome in the peak harvest season. 
Purnananda Buragohain Maidam temple is located at a distance of approximately 5 km from the city of Jorhat. It is situated on the way to Sibsagar on the banks of River Tocklai near the Macharhat Namghar. This historic site was constructed by the son of Purnananda Buragohain, who established his kingdom at Macharhat. This temple is very old and was originally constructed during the rule of Swargadeo Chandrakanta Singha in the year 1817.
Majuli Island in Assam is perhaps the largest Riverine Island in the world and lie in the lap of the majestic Brahmaputra. It is a freshwater island located about 20 kms from Jorhat. The population of the island live in the 23 villages on the island and are primarily tribal people. The island is rich in both natural and cultural history and is coupled with some unique Hindu monastries these features have resulted in Majuli Island being short listed for consideration for UNESCO World Heritage status.
One of the excursions from Jorhat located around 55 kms, is The Talatal Ghar in Sibsagar. It is a palace which was initially built as an army base. It houses four storeys above ground, two secret tunnels and three floors below ground level which were used as exit routes during the Ahom wars (which give the structure its name). The present edifice of brick masonry was built by Rajeswara Singha (AD 1751-1769). The monument is built in a north-south axis with long annexes at either ends and at the middle. Except an octagonal small temple, guard room, three large chambers and a big hall with courtyard having separate entrance, the entire area on this floor is left open.
An important landmark in Sibsagar town is Sibsagar tank which is 200 years old. This tank is situated in the center of the town. On its banks are three major temples namely the Shiva Dol, the Vishnu Dol and the Devi Dol dedicated respectively to Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and Goddess Durga.
