About Wakro

Wakro is a village panchayat located in the Lohit district of Arunachal-Pradesh and is renowned as the Orange capital of Arunachal Pradesh. It is located 28 km towards East from District headquarters Tezu. Wakro is inhabited primarily by the Mishmis. They speak their own dialect which varies from different groups. The Miju Mishmi are animistic and unlike other tribes in Arunachal, worship a number of deities, most of whom are connected to elements of nature. Mishmis are very rich in culture and may be termed as a festival loving people. They believe any day of the year is auspicious for a ceremony if provisions exist. The area leading to Wakro is inhabited primarily by people from the Khampti, Singpho and Deori tribes. Khamptis and Singphos both follow the Hinayana School of Buddhism. Wakro is the country of oranges and visited for its proximity to Namdhapa National Park and tribal heritage of the area.

s Sharing borders with Myanmar, Namdapha National Park’s vast bio-diversity supports a fabulous range of endangered flora and fauna and avian life. It is the 15ht Tiger Reserve in the country spread over 1985 sq km. The Noa-Dihing River meanders through the forest fed by numerous tributaries and has a rich variety of aquatic life. The sanctuary is the natural habitat of all four great cats to be found in Arunachal Pradesh along with the state's bird i.e. Indian Hornbill.
