Mumbai is the capital city of Maharashtra. It is the most populous, dynamic, cosmopolitan and crowded city in India. Consisting of seven swampy islands when the Portuguese acquired it in 1534, Bombay came to the British Crown in 1661. Finding little use for the islands, the British then leased them for apittance to the East India Company, which quickly realized their potential as an excellent natural harbor in the Arabian Sea. The city has now reverted to its local name Mumbai, from Mumba Devi, the eight armed goddess worshipped by the islands’ original inhabitants. Along with the urban areas, including the cities of Navi Mumbai, Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, it is one of the most populous urban regions in the world. The country’s financial centre and its busiest port, Mumbai is also home to the world’s biggest cinema industry, known as Bollywood.

The Gateway of India on the waterfront was conceived as a triumphal arch to commemorate the visit of British’s George V and Queen Mary for the Delhi Darbar in 1911. It is Mumbai’s most famous landmark, was the first sight to greet travelers to Indian shores during the heyday of British Raj. The monumental structure with two large reception halls, arches and minarets and embellishments inspired by medieval Gujarati architecture was designed by the Scottish architect George Wittet.
Known as the `Queen’s Necklace’ after the glittering string of streetlights lining the road, Marine Drive (renamed Netaji Subhash Chandra Road) sweeps along a sea facing promenade. This C-shaped road links Nariman Point to Babulnath and is situated at the foot of Malabar Hill. It was built on land reclaimed from the sea in the 1920s. It is known world over and this tourist spot has also been called Sonapur by the locals of the city. The scenic beauty of the perfectly lined palm trees offers its visitors an enthralling experience.
Especially renowned for its superb sculptures and miniature paintings, the Prince of Wales Museum’s exhibits are housed in a grand Indo-Saracenic building, designed by George Wittet. The Prince of Wales Museum, now commonly known as 'Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya', was established during the early 20th century. This museum is considered as a heritage structure in Mumbai because of its admirable architecture. Its foundation stone was laid by the Prince of Wales in 1905. During World War I, it served as a military hospital and was formally inauguarated in 1923
Haji Ali Dargah is a mosque in Mumbai built in the middle of the sea with a constricted path leading to the dargah. It is the tomb of Saint Haji Ali. The white mosque is located 500 yards into the sea and can be accessed only during the low tide. The dargah dates to the 15th century, but the dazzling white mosque was built in the 1940s and seems to float on its small island in the sea. An exquisite example of Indo-Islamic Architecture, associated with legends about doomed lovers. This 400-year-old structure that stands in Mumbai today has degenerated and corroded in many places and the structural upgradation of this marvelous structure began in 2008. People from all over the world visit the Haji Ali Dargah irrespective of caste, religion and creed. 
Victoria Terminus (VT) now known as Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an historic railway station in Mumbai. It is the most impressive example of Victorian Italianate Gothic Revival architecture with influences from traditional Mughal buildings and is a rich extravaganza of domes, spires and arches. Designed by Frederick William Stevens and decorated by local art students and craftsmen.. It was completed in 1888 and named to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. It now serves as the headquarters of the Central Railways and daily 1000 trains and two million passengers pass through the station.
