The Kanha National Park was created on 1 June 1955 and forms the core of the Kanha Tiger Reserve which was created in 1974 under Project Tiger. The Kanha National Park was originally a part of the Gondwanas or the "land of the Gonds". The forests were inhabited by two tribes Gond and Baiga. In the 1930s, Kanha area was divided into two sanctuaries, Hallon of 250 sq km and Banjar of 300 sq km. The park stretches in two districts Mandla and Balaghat in an area of 940 sq km. And together with 1067 sq km of surrounding buffer zone and the neighboring 110 sq km Phen Sanctuary which makes it the largest National Park in Central India. It has 43 species of mammals including tiger, leopard and wild dog, The park is also home to more than 300 bird species. The Park's landmark achievement is the preservation of the rare hard ground Swamp Deer (Barasingha), saving it from near extinction. This park is considered to be one of the finest wildlife areas in the world.
