The Kanha National Park was created on 1 June 1955 and forms the core of the Kanha Tiger Reserve which was created in 1974 under Project Tiger. The Kanha National Park was originally a part of the Gondwanas or the "land of the Gonds". The forests were inhabited by two tribes Gond and Baiga. In the 1930s, Kanha area was divided into two sanctuaries, Hallon of 250 sq km and Banjar of 300 sq km. The park stretches in two districts Mandla and Balaghat in an area of 940 sq km. And together with 1067 sq km of surrounding buffer zone and the neighboring 110 sq km Phen Sanctuary which makes it the largest National Park in Central India. It has 43 species of mammals including tiger, leopard and wild dog, The park is also home to more than 300 bird species. The Park's landmark achievement is the preservation of the rare hard ground Swamp Deer (Barasingha), saving it from near extinction. This park is considered to be one of the finest wildlife areas in the world.

Kanha Museum, situated inside the park near the entrance of Kisli Gate provides useful information about varied topics including park maps, the topography, pug marks of various animals etc, which can enhance one’s experience of visiting the park. It shows the activities along with the characteristic of the park. This museum also shows the rich culture of the local tribe.
Near the visitor centre of the park, one can see the stumps of two giant sal trees that are worshipped daily in the forests by the local people of the place. These stumps known as Raja Rani, depicts the presence these trees in the past.
