Indore is the largest city in the state of Madhya Pradesh. It is located on the southern edge of Malwa Plateau and is about 190 km west of the state capital of Bhopal. It is situated on the banks of the River Khan and Sarawati. The city of Indore derived its name from the deity itself. The history of Indore is inseparable from the history of the Holkar State. The founder of the House of Holkars was Malhar Rao Holkar, born in 1693 AD. His soldierly qualities brought him to the forefront under the Peshwa and he was rewarded with the gift of territories comprising the Indore region. The bustling commercial center of Madhya Pradesh, Indore was princely state until 1947, ruled by the Maratha Holkar dynasty. Indore is known for its architectural splendor.
