About Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad is Gujarat’s leading city and was the state capital until 1970. It is located on the banks of the Sabarmati River, 30 km from the state capital Gandhinagar. Legend has it that the city owes its foundation to Sultan Ahmed Shah (1411-42), who built his new capital at banks of river and named it after himself – Ahmedabad. It was said that Ahmedabad hung on three threads: gold, silk and cotton. The city’s present prominence is due to largely to one family of textile magnates, the Sarabhais, who were patrons of the arts and supporters of Mahatma Gandhi - the supreme leader of Indian independence movement. After independence, Ahmedabad became a provincial town of Bombay (now named as Mumbai) and on May 1, 1960 it became a state capital as a result of the bifurcation of the state of Bombay into two states of Maharashtra and Gujarat. The city is divided into old and new by the Sabarmati river.

Swaminarayan Temples

s The first and foremost Swaminarayan temple was built at Kalupur in Ahmedabad. It is dedicated to Lord Swaminarayan, a 19th century saint. It took 13 years and thousands of devoted volunteers to build this 23 acre, exquisitely well maintained cultural and religious complex, finished in 1992. The temple boasts of its exquisite wooden carvings. The structural design of the Ahmedabad Swaminarayan temple is mesmerizing. The interiors and exteriors of the temple have been adorned with the typical Gujarati designs that depict different aspects of the Gujarati culture and lifestyle.
